Red Gallery is proud to host “DOUBLET”; an exhibition of the graduation works of four BA students of the Middlesex University: Ruta Pu & Urte Janus (a.k.a. Terrible Twins), Gerda Le Fou and Egle Stirna.
The thoughts of these young creatives are mediated through photography and film. The exhibition will however not only fill your field of vision but also encourage you to interact with the worlds they create in order to deal with their experiences, fears, doubts and impulses.
The works of Ruta and Urte are dealing with theological and philosophical concepts which they feel are relevant to their own trails of thought and the society today. They find their tools within the canvases of surrealist painters, 17th century still live paintings, as well as underneath their beds, in their closets, and in their dreams. Their starting points are sieved through these, resulting in strongly symbolical, iconographical images, each of which evokes a frozen frame of a theater play. Ruta and Urte carefully construct a stage for the characters which carry their story; they contemplate every piece of garment, every line of makeup, each drop of fake blood. The aesthetics of their photographs are sleek and polished and leave the viewer no chance to doubt the authority of the hands that made them.
Gerda and Egle are makers of short films, which could be described as visual poems, personal diary entries or interpretations of points in human existence, which call for a different kind of treatment than a simple recounting of one or the other event. Even though they often introduce a narrative, they rather aim to create a certain atmosphere, a metaphor or a feeling than to simply take the viewer by the hand and guide him/her from the beginning to the end. In their cinematographic works, they deal with the friction and dilemma caused by the outside world invading one’s inner world and the other way around.
Dreams are the gold nuggets that remain after the sand has been washed off.
We are looking forward to welcoming you to this showcase of emerging, enthusiastic and determined talent.
