Everyone talks about the state but I haven't seen much analysis of what it is. I'm hoping to create a state of mind by issuing directions for performers to carry out in person. This has a similarity to how some states operate. We can't get away from it, we're always in a state; whether that's political, chemical or otherwise. It could be said that the state is deeply connected to performance art due to the commodity value of this art form being diminished (thus, the market it is sold to becomes the state). However, the state will only pay for certain things due to pre-determined criteria. This creates a state of performance – of a certain kind. People perform in the state all the time but they do not realize it.
When curating an art exhibition I, the curator, will pick particular artists and (perhaps metaphorically) frame the works to deliver a particular message or atmosphere. The exhibition itself is a mini-state with its own rules. Yet this could also be considered a metaphor for our wider lives. The performances that we write, act out and curate in an art context serve the purpose of opening our minds to possibilities within the wider world, and our own material reality in the present.
