About Sign of the Times Book

SIGN OF THE TIMES by Fiona Cartledge

Sign of the Times is a celebration of the London based boutique and parties run by Fiona Cartledge during the early ‘90’s. Beginning as a stall on Camden Market, Sign of the Times soon opened in Kensington Market, Hyper Hyper in Kensington and finally as a boutique in Covent Garden.

Stocking the latest club wear and fanzines it became a hit with London’s nightlife community and a popular stop-off for stylists including Isabella Blow, Katy England and Katie Grand to name a few. Fiona was also instrumental in developing and nurturing new graduate talent, and emerging designers at the time.

The legendary series of Sign of the Times club nights began in 1990 drawing many influential British DJs, including Mark Moore, Danny Rampling, Paul Daley, The Chemical Brothers, Justin Robertson & Sasha.

Paul Shobbrook’s original flyer artwork and art direction for Sign of the Times became one of the defining graphic style’s of the era and is still instantly recognizable today.

The cream of the fashion, music and art scenes were regular attendees at both the parties & boutique, including Leigh Bowery, Alexander McQueen, Bobby Gillespie, Kylie Minogue, Tricky and Bjork.
