Few works by emerging Chilean artist Macarena Yañez, ‘11677.595km’ is Macy's forthcoming London show at Red Gallery, Shoreditch. ‘11677.595km’ is the distance in km from Santiago (Chile) to London - the distance MACAY will have to travel for the show.
Macy's work encompasses street murals, collage, site-specific 2D and 3D installations and textiles. Her collages are infused with strands of her Chilean roots with a unique feminine twist. She frequently plays with scale and combines black and white 50’s advertising imagery with encyclopedic illustrations and old photos of wildlife to create her surreal but non-threatening dreamscapes. A hybrid world of fashion models with animal heads dancing through choruses of cut-out smiling mouths, giant birds, fruit and impossibly perfect floral displays.
Macy has carved out a well-deserved niche in the predominantly male world of the underground street artist.
More recently she has been deeply influenced by the rich and diverse cultural experiences she has had through travel. This year Macy spent 3 months on a cultural residency in St Etienne, sponsored by the St Etienne Local Authority and the French Institute. She also spent time in Barcelona absorbing the creative scene of its annual music festivals.
Her latest work sings a poetic visual song of iconic imagery; travel, distance and time, the influence of electronic music and the sounds and nuances of foreign languages.
Macarena Yañez, ‘Macay’ is Chilean-born. She gained a BA in Fine Art from the Universidad de Chile in Santiago and then came to live in London to complete an MA in Fine Art at Central St Martins. Macay has enjoyed creative chapters of her life living, working and exhibiting both in her homeland of Chile and in France, Spain, and Germany.
In 2013 Macay went on a 3-month cultural residency in St Etienne sponsored by the St Etienne Local Authority and the French Institute. Macay has also been in Barcelona, where she collaborated on a mural at the Primavera Sound Festival on the Chilean Independent Music Industry stand.

“We are very excited to be supporting Chile’s emerging new street artist MACAY and her exhibition of Street Art at the Red Gallery.
Art and wine are a natural fit but more specifically the ethos behind TRIO is all about the art of blending. Like MACAY’s work with collage, at TRIO we feel that each of the three elements in the blend creates a final result that is more beautifully balanced than the individual parts on their own.” TRIO Reserva
